‘Will repeal 3 farm laws’: PM Modi asks farmers to end the protest.

PM Modi urged to protesting farmers to end their protest and return to their homes during his address to the nation on Guru Nanak Jayanti.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced days before the first anniversary of farmer demonstrations that the government would abolish the three agricultural reform laws. PM Modi urged protesting farmers to end their agitation and return to their homes during his address to the nation on Guru Nanak Jayanti. 

“Whatever I did, it was for the benefit of farmers. What I’m doing is for the greater good of the country. We would take constitutional procedures to remove these farm regulations during the upcoming Parliament session” Prime Minister Modi stated. 

Since November 28, 2020, thousands of farmers, largely from Punjab, Haryana, and western Uttar Pradesh, have camped at multiple Delhi border points, seeking the complete repeal of three farm laws and a legal guarantee of the minimum support price (MSP) for their crops. 

Key points from the speech 

The following are the key points from Prime Minister Modi’s speech: 

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that the three farm laws were enacted for the benefit of farmers, but “despite our best efforts, we were unable to convince a portion of farmers.” 
  • Prime Minister Modi stated that the three agriculture regulations were enacted to empower farmers, particularly small farmers. “Throughout my five decades in public life, I have witnessed farmers’ hardships and challenges up close,” the prime minister stated. 
  • The agriculture budget has been increased fivefold, with over Rs 1.25 lakh crore invested yearly, Prime Minister Modi stated. 
  • In his speech, Prime Minister Modi emphasised the importance of government actions in boosting agricultural production. “Our rural markets have been boosted. Numerous programmes have been implemented to assist small farmers” PM Modi stated. 
  • In his outreach to farmers, Prime Minister Modi stated that the majority of farmers own less than two hectares of land. “When I became Prime Minister in 2014, we (the government) placed a premium on farmer welfare and development… Many people are unaware that 80/100 are small-scale farmers with less than two hectares of land and a population of over ten crore. This plot of land is critical to their survival “Prime Minister Modi stated.
